Portraits of Homes, 2D and 3D

I have been creating portraits
of homes since 1982.  I created
a sculptural series of historic
architecture for the Boulder, CO
Arts Commission, the city of
Aspen and more than 200
commissions for private collectors.
This is a small selection of the
commissioned homes.
Media include porcelain, watercolor,
pen & ink, pastels, graphite

Van Gogh in true 3-D...

I worked on a film about
van Gogh's life in the 1990s
called Crow in the Storm.
Laid out as a path through
his life by way of his paintings,
envisioned through 100 pages
of color storyboards for
traditional animation-
save for a final scene shot
depicting van Gogh's death,
to the music of John Fogarty,
Long As I Can See The Light.

The movie never got made.

But from it sprung a need to create
Vincent van Gogh and his world
in actual 3-D to accentuate the
concept. Some three dimensional
versions, in clay, of Van Gogh...
Most of the photographs are taken
by Jerry Downs.

Buddha in the Curl
from Sean Daly's memoir,
What We Talk About When
We Talk About Cancer.

Many of the models for these
works were statuary that at one
time inhabited the Sacred Space
of Summerland, California.
Some of the images shown here
are from murals and are lifesize.

Modern ARF thanks them for
their spiritual and artistic inspiration.

The artist also spends time
haunting the Asian collection
of the Norton Simon Museum
for additional inspiration.

Illustrated books...

In addition to Romancing
The Smoke: Reflections
of a Nicotine Addict,
I recently illustrated Sean
Daly's memoir, What We
Talk About When We Talk
About Cancer. (2016)

Outdoor Shower becomes Modernist Painting...

Mark and Marcia Benkert
of Ojai, CA commissioned
a large geometric Mondrian-
style wall about 9' x 12' that
integrated the colour scheme
of their cozy yurt into the
private courtyard that is the
backdrop for the outdoor
shower...the water pipes
defined the geometry; and
it resulted in a wonderful
collaboration...
